The annual growth in Internet consumption forces telecommunications operators to squeeze again and again the possibilities offered by the technology, obtaining increasingly higher transmission capacities. This implies a continuous modernization of the transport network looking for increasing efficiencies, being able to transmit greater speed over the same optical fibers, so Orange has tested for the first time a 400 Gbps link in its network in order to guarantee the quality of service you will need in the coming years.
Orange Espana is the first country of the Orange Group to carry out a test with 400 Gbps links and the first Spanish operator in make use of this type of links on WDM equipment and traffic on a real network. The WDM (Wavelength Multiplexing) equipment is capable of managing several parallel links on the same pair of optical fibers.
This test is a big step for Orange since will double the capacity of the transport network and prepare for the growth of traffic planned in the future, as well as for new technologies such as 5G , that will require high capacity fiber links. In this way, it will be possible to offer super-broadband accesses in fixed-mobile and enable the data transmission capacity necessary for applications such as autonomous cars, virtual and augmented reality, etc.
innovation in the orange network
These experiences have been carried out between two main Orange nodes in Madrid , on a real transport network. To do this, Orange has installed a new 400G LQCP card on an OSN 9800 UPS and managed with a local interface prepared to perform the test protocol. All parameters evaluated have offered a satisfactory result.
Monica Sala, general director of network and systems of Orange Spain , underlines the importance of this test, "that seeks innovation to guarantee the best service for our customers expanding our network capabilities efficiently and safely ".
a new ring
This is another step in the renewal of the network that Orange carries out for the future. The company was already a pioneer in this regard last year when it put into service a new transmission ring to unite Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Bilbao, Valladolid and Madrid with 200 Gbps transmission links , in order to ensure annual growth in data transmission in the coming years.
It should be noted that Orange's mobile network is today the one that supports more traffic and serves more clients in Spain due to the growth of its different brands and the Virtual Mobile Operators customers that offer their services on the company network.
On the other hand, Orange fiber network already reaches 14 million homes in Spain with its coverage , which has encouraged the momentum of its FTTH business, so that the company has led growth in high fiber net for 10 consecutive quarters, adding 162,000 new customers in the fourth quarter and 623,000 in the year.
