Unveiling anonymity slows the spread of false news on social networks , promotes cooperation among users and helps resolve conflicts, according to the conclusions that emerge from a study on human behavior in which has participated the University of Zaragoza.
This report has been prepared by an international team, of which the researcher Yamir Moreno is part of , of the Institute of Biocomputation and Physics of Complex Systems (BIFI) of the University of Zaragoza, and its results They have just been published in the journal Science Advances and collected on the website of the Sinc Agency.
Stop the fake news on the Internet
According to Professor Moreno, these data indicate that eliminating anonymity could stop the spread of fake news on the Internet and could be relevant in the era of globalization like ours, with social systems in that anonymity or its absence is important, for example, on Twitter or Facebook.”The study also contributes to the effort of science to describe and better understand the true mechanisms that govern human behavior not only at the individual level, but also when interact.
154 university students in the experiment
This work, in which other prestigious researchers from countries such as China, Japan or Germany have also participated , exposes the results of an experiment based on the 'Prisoner's Dilemma' (a fundamental problem of the game theory that shows that two people may not cooperate even if it goes against the interest of both) in which 154 students of the Yuannam University of Economics and Finance in China played several rounds for couples.
These couples were established on the basis of two fundamental criteria : Among individuals who did not know each other and among others who already knew each other.Among the fundamental conclusions of the experiment it was shown that the absence of anonymity significantly increased the frequency of cooperation, as well as the average reward.
Likewise, the more prosocial actions, for example, obtained a greater reward and better classification in those couples who already knew each other. In this way, the researchers that the elimination of anonymity drives cooperation.
