How do the great Instagram celebrities get so many followers?

Some time ago we talked about how we built an idealization through the photos that we posted on Instagram, an improved version of our real life, with a filter hit and image retouching, carefully choosing each angle and trimming everything that we »about» .

That social networks are a showcase is something commonly accepted, very valid even to be inspired, but what few users know is that behind Instagram there is a whole alternative market, where real accounts coexist with fake , users giving likes with bots giving likes , a lot of money at stake and many algorithms doing their 'magic' behind the scenes.

I WANT TO HAVE A MILLION OF FRIENDS

Jumping for joy in the Clift Hotel (San Francisco), on December 1, 2015 the blogger Alexandra Pereira reached the million followers. Its evolution ended stalling, currently retaining 1.3 million faithful. But, How many of those were really active followers?

Well, let's start at the beginning. To get followers on Instagram there is a classic method: follow many people and comment on their accounts .If your comments are ingenious, it's a matter of time for someone to enter to your profile and do the same as you do, getting some extra followers .

Instagram rewards these meaningful connections, recommending you related profiles. But this is an exhausting job.You must keep your Instagram constantly active, publishing suggestive and different material .But it is not easy when they currently exist more than 600 million active accounts.

There are those who organize contests, who turns their posts into small recipes and who, well, who cheats.

BOTS ARE MY ALLIES

How do the great Instagram celebrities get so many followers?

Turbo Followers, Followers Pro, Get Followers BOOM ...call it what you want. There are quite a few alternatives and all under the same premise: you pay money and your fan counter is uploaded.Through stores like Apptoide, where all the unauthorized APK files fit in Google Play, these applications get you more weekly followers than any viral video .

But who are these people? They are not people, they are bots.Random accounts with mixed data, which comment in a rather nondescript way and sneak emojis like who shakes a deck.Alexandra Pereira's example made a lot of noise in her day, but there is more.

These bots are smarter than it seems : they don't just do follow or unfollow automatically-to attract real followers to your networks-, but have algorithms to perform a word analysis and approach the accounts that best fit your style, being able to create trends, to modify the entire natural structure of Instagram.

As Instagram is not chronological, all we see is through an interaction algorithm: greater interaction, greater visibility. These bots comment, give likes , generate more or less activity according to the time slot and, finally, they randomize human communication. This is something that is also present on Twitter and it was on Myspace almost a decade ago.Unfortunately, this guy of tools unbalance the entire community. They make it boring.

THE GUILT IS OF THE ALGORITHMS

A little over a month ago, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Mandamas, published a manifesto where he talked about the construction of a global community that, in essence, has broken, It has been frivolized to the point of becoming a simple gateway of memes and viral news, mostly false.

51% of traffic on the network is generated by bots .And beware, we are not counting the crawler spiders. This scenario deforms and completely distorts that idealized image of meritocracy by on top of everything, but, as a certain blogger pointed out, «what are 100k followers for if they don't interact with you later».

There are other tools to keep track of traffic and propose a communication strategy: choose schedules more traffic , post on hot topics-chocolate cakes always work-, etc.

THERE IS A LOT OF MONEY IN PLAY

And some lies.Just look at the image of Dan Bilzerian: from the outside we see a thirty-year-old playboy who lives at full speed .But behind it he hides a lifetime by squandering wealth directly by his father, "a corporate looter who in 1993 received fines worth almost 62 million dollars from the Securities and Exchange Commission."

And, like Dan, many other stars: Marcus Y.H.Wang, Ezra Williams or Dorothy Wang. Having followers is having visibility, social power , no matter how you get them.

THE MOST HONEST USERS

How do the great Instagram celebrities get so many followers?

There are so many followers buying services that some already boast dignity and quality service: «As a professional provider of services on Instagram, we take pride in our work and use all our experience and accumulated experience to offer only the best results quality ».It should be said, of course, that any alteration or manipulation of the data of an account violates the community rules of use. It is still a form of spam in disguise .

Of course, those who do not need this type of tools are those profiles that have marketing campaigns around their figures: Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande or Selena Gomez, with 100, 102, and 106 million followers respectively , are the most visited and followed profiles of this network.Against all odds, these are the safest profiles.

If you want to try your luck, in markets like Fiverr or Upwork you can find users who lend you their bots for a few dollars. They will access your account and execute a script that will generate likes randomly in function of users hashtags, and you will even have some popular profiles following you.Sure, if someone with 25,000 followers follows you, this will generate an effect called .You are cool !

The opposite can also happen: you start following people you have given follow yourself.Yes, there are those who buy and sell accounts, and yours can end up kidnapped. Before a situation so you should immediately go to the Instagram customer service and report the incident. If someone hacks you it is not your fault .

In any case , nothing like being legal. You may not reach glory but you will have a clear conscience .

Internet of plants: a tomato knows as much about networks as you

The possibility of plant species communicating through complex networks, what some scientists have called the internet of plants , is an issue that has been discussed for a long time, at least 20 years. It was in 1997 when the scientist Suzanne Simard , from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada), published a study in the journal Nature on how Forest plants use complex systems where species exchange nutrients, send warning signals and relate to the environment. Although there is no scientific consensus, several investigations seem to support this hypothesis. If confirmed, as we read in a fascinating report by the Sinc Agency, the forests would act as huge structures that are articulated under the soil through a network in which factors invisible to the human eye interact and can determine the future of the climate.Understanding how it works is the challenge that even science faces. internet of plants and the wisdom of forests The premise of Suzanne Simard ...

Twitter shows the best of ourselves (it wasn't always going to be the worst)

In the era of social networks, accustomed to interact daily with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google or WhatsApp, we forget that these tools are phenomenal in the History of Humanity capable of mobilize hundreds of thousands of people in very different geographical locations in a matter of hours or even minutes. Already in the past, Twitter has asserted its more social dimension to mobilize people, companies or organizations and also, from a broader perspective, feelings of solidarity and support or also of rejection and repulses towards causes with an important mediatic impact.Recently, Twitter was once again the engine of solidarity after Dortmund's explosions as the Borussia Dortmund team bus passed on its way to the local stadium on the occasion of the Champions League match between the Borussia and the Monaco. These explosions did not have the devastating effect that they could have caused , so that everything remained in a major social commotion at international lev...

Most apps for children violate your privacy

Do you know if apps with which children enjoy their safety? A team of researchers from the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) of the University of Berkeley has studied compliance with the Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in these mobile applications for the little ones, through a scalable dynamic analysis that allows the automatic evaluation of privacy behaviors of Android apps. Are social networks damaging democracy?

The revelations according to which Russian agents inserted ads on Facebook that tried to influence the 2016 US elections raise a disturbing question: is Facebook bad for democracy? As an expert in the social and political repercussions of technology, I think that the problem is not exclusively from Facebook, but that it is much broader: Social networks are weakening some of the conditions that have historically enabled the existence of national states democratic. I understand that it is a dramatic statement, and I do not expect anyone to believe it immediately, but considering that almost half of all potential voters received false news promoted by the Russians in Facebook is an argument that must be debated.
