Now that we are immersed in era of the overinformation, in which social networks seem to have become a collapse of 'fake News' and its Users feel a growing concern for their privacy , a study places us before a new problem for all those who still retain some faith in these social media: 66% of tweets with links on Twitter are published by robots, according to a study published by the independent institute Pew Research Center.
automatic accounts disseminate on the network messages with links to information, leisure or sports websites originated by bots , and not by humans.
To prepare the study, more than one million tweets in English published between July 27 and September 11, 2017 have been analyzed, in order to determine the nature of the link exchange infrastructure on Twitter , as well as to get more information about the behavior and reach of bots within the platform.
accounts managed by machines
Related In total, some 1.2 billion links shared on Twitter have been taken into account, generated by 140,545 accounts in the microblogging network .
The results of this analysis reveal that at least two thirds of these links were generated by bots , defined as accounts that can publish content or even interact with other users automatically and without human intervention.
It should also be noted that According to the data published by Pew Research Center, the topics most present in these links on Twitter are related to pornography-90% of all links disseminated on Twitter; and sports, with a total of 76% of all the links on this topic shared on the social network.Behind the links on commercial products (73%), the links on Twitter on news and current events (66 %) and the links on the news of celebrities (62%).
bots are efficient on twitter
Apart from the figures, this report also indicates that highly active bots in the microblogging network are very efficient. In fact, 22% of the links to news and events generated during the duration of the study originated them.500 accounts , all of them suspected of being bots.
If we look at the reverse situation, the 500 most active human users in the social network only generated 6% of the links on Twitter.
However, this study does not conclude that bots are determinants in the viralization of fake news. In fact, as we already published in nobbot, it is striking that , contrary to what we might think, humans are more likely to be fake news broadcasters.
