YouTube redirects searches of terrorist content to videos against violence

The YouTube video platform has launched a new formula to combat extremist content. 'The Redirect Method' is a tool that allows users to redirect a search related to terrorism towards Playlists that include videos against violence.This initiative joins Google’s strategy to eradicate content that promotes hate.


Although it is practically impossible to find scenes of extreme aggression or sex recordings on YouTube, hundreds of videos containing violent scenes are still active , within reach of any user and that can hurt their sensibility or worse, they can serve to encourage extremism.

To combat this trend, YouTube has launched this new tool after carrying carried out a deep investigation on how they take advantage of the technology to spread their hate messages and recruit new members to these extremist groups.Thus, 'The Redirect Method' uses specific content to move users away from these videos, bringing them closer to others aimed at counterterrorism fight.


YouTube's fight against terrorism


This is a strategy to discredit practices, counteracting them. To optimize their effectiveness, YouTube has not published the list of terms related to terrorism and violent groups that will redirect to other videos that they fight against extremism, as we have been able to read in Computer Today.


From YouTube they have explained that the launch of 'The Redirect Method' is their »last effort to provide more resources and more content that can help change the minds of people at risk of being radicalized».This new tool has been developed by Jiggsaw, an integrated group of Google’s parent company, Alphabet.


To continue its fight to curb extremist content on YouTube, the company will also expand the new functionality'The Redirect Method 'to searches in other languages. In addition, this tool will incorporate a machine learning system-in such a way that it adapts to search trends and continues to identify extremist terms.


To carry out this initiative, YouTube works with NGO experts in the development of videos aimed at counteracting extremist messages , designed and focused for the different stages of the radicalization process.
