Google Classroom, the best way to organize online classes

Google Classroom, the best way to organize online classes

Have you ever attended an online class ? Although based on the digital world, most of the resources that are usually used take more than a decade with us, such as Skype (2003) for the retransmission of a live event, forums for the discussion and correction of activities, chats like Facebook groups (and even WhatsApp), or directories from which to download information. Related

We are not talking about the classic MOOCs ( Massive Online Open Courses or Online Massive and Open Courses) in which a video lesson teaches us something that is then corrected from automatic way by a computer; but of the transposition of a physical class into a digital space, something not easy, given their differences.Let's begin with the basic keys.

How do you access Google Classroom?

Google Classroom has two possibilities: on the one hand, HTML5 support accessible from any browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Chrome, Safari...) through the link www.classroom.google.com; on the other, an application available for Android and iOS.

Registration is done automatically when we access with a Gmail account, so more than registration it would be a log in .Once our credentials have been entered, we will see this in browser and mobile phone:

How do you create a class in Google Class?

If Google products or services are characterized by something, it is because of the simplicity with which they interact with them.Once logged in, simply follow the arrow on the screen under which you can read «Create your first class or sign up for her ».For this class, we will choose (in order) a name, a section and a subject:

It can be seen that in the mobile solution we have fewer options and that we cannot choose a subject. It is recommended, if we are teachers, that we use the application from the browser.Once created, we can access it:

It is very interesting to see how in the lower right corner of the class «How to use Trello to create a Kanban board» a folder symbol appears. If we click, a new window will open to another Google service, Google Drive , where the My Drive> route will have been created automatically Classroom> How to use Trello to create a Kanban board Optimize lists .In this repository all the course information will be stored.

How to set up a class in Google Classroom?

We can start with the Information tab, where we have the option to modify the title, add material, access the previously mentioned Google Drive folder and do something very interesting: create a calendar for students and invite other teachers to include their own lessons in the chosen subject.

In the case at hand, we have uploaded a small document explaining that it is a Kanban board and an explanatory video on how to build one.If students can take this first class and see if they are interested or not to move on before putting on to design a specific one with Trello.

How is a student invited to Google Classroom?

In the Students tab, click on Invite students and write your Gmail email.Importantly, without a Google account, none of these services (on the other hand free) will be accessible.Once the students are invited, they will receive an email to confirm their union to the class:

How to make a new publication in Google Classroom?

As teachers, we have several alternatives:

  • Create a question that students may or may not answer, in which we can include attached documents, videos and images, and even brief descriptions to help them.

  • Create a task , similar to homework, in which the student's interaction is requested, which can be marked as completed, provide information or create new related documents.

  • Create an ad with which to notify students of any news, as there will be no class on a given day.

In the image above we can see these publications from the teacher's view.In these verticals (which look something better in the browser) we can correct what the students uploaded , support them with their doubts , send targeted duties (to specific students), edit our own problems, etc.

How do you access a Google Classroom class as a student?

In order to access a Google Classroom class, there are two options:

Wait for the teacher to send us a link to our mail, as we have seen above.
If we know the class code (we have seen it in a photo above), we can enter and access it.

If we begin the session as students, the class will look somewhat different. On the one hand, we continue to have the verticals of News and Information, where we will see the last changes of the teacher and the general information of the class, respectively. On the other, we can see a list of the rest of the students in the class, very useful because we can locate them in other Google services (such as Hangouts) and start a conversation to answer questions and work in teams.

As the teacher creates different tasks, students will receive new emails (one for each task) to our inbox, so we can keep up to date with all the news in real time.

Google Classroom is a very powerful tool to give our classes that not only competes with others such as Blackboard Learn, Moodle or Open edX.Due to the ease of access, create content and interact between students and teachers, is presented as one of the best alternatives in teaching .

Internet of plants: a tomato knows as much about networks as you

The possibility of plant species communicating through complex networks, what some scientists have called the internet of plants , is an issue that has been discussed for a long time, at least 20 years. It was in 1997 when the scientist Suzanne Simard , from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada), published a study in the journal Nature on how Forest plants use complex systems where species exchange nutrients, send warning signals and relate to the environment. Although there is no scientific consensus, several investigations seem to support this hypothesis. If confirmed, as we read in a fascinating report by the Sinc Agency, the forests would act as huge structures that are articulated under the soil through a network in which factors invisible to the human eye interact and can determine the future of the climate.Understanding how it works is the challenge that even science faces. internet of plants and the wisdom of forests The premise of Suzanne Simard ...

The new 2016 Radio Frequency and Health Report collects, updates and analyzes the scientific evidence on the subject for the period between January 2013 and June 2016. radio frequencies are not dangerous According to the conclusions of the report " the critical analysis of the evidence supports that there are no technical or sanitary reasons that justify the arbitrary and discretionary imposition of more demanding exposure limits than those recommended by WHO-ICNIRP and the Union European ", while the application of more restrictive limits" would imply increasing the n...

Sometimes one thinks that social networks were created to share photos of faces putting on little bones and images of dishes overflowing with appetizing foods or, better, of faces putting little bones in front of plates overflowing with appetizing foods in the same shot.is to see faces, faces, faces...all of them smiling, as if looking at the smartphone mirror was the height of happiness. And it does not seem that there are so many beautiful and happy people, or maybe yes, that you go Namely. What envy. Twitter shows the best of ourselves (it wasn't always going to be the worst)

In the era of social networks, accustomed to interact daily with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google or WhatsApp, we forget that these tools are phenomenal in the History of Humanity capable of mobilize hundreds of thousands of people in very different geographical locations in a matter of hours or even minutes. Already in the past, Twitter has asserted its more social dimension to mobilize people, companies or organizations and also, from a broader perspective, feelings of solidarity and support or also of rejection and repulses towards causes with an important mediatic impact.Recently, Twitter was once again the engine of solidarity after Dortmund's explosions as the Borussia Dortmund team bus passed on its way to the local stadium on the occasion of the Champions League match between the Borussia and the Monaco. These explosions did not have the devastating effect that they could have caused , so that everything remained in a major social commotion at international lev...

Most apps for children violate your privacy

Do you know if apps with which children enjoy their safety? A team of researchers from the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) of the University of Berkeley has studied compliance with the Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in these mobile applications for the little ones, through a scalable dynamic analysis that allows the automatic evaluation of privacy behaviors of Android apps. After studying 5,855 applications aimed at children, the research concludes that most of these apps, 57%, violate the privacy of their users mainly due to the use of data by third parties. apps for children and privacy Although many apps offer options in their configuration to respect the federal law that protects minors in the United States, by disabling tracking, their results suggest that a majority of applications either do not use these options or propagate them in wrong way. In addition, researchers believe that 19% of apps for children send user IDs to third parties to show ...

Are social networks damaging democracy?

The revelations according to which Russian agents inserted ads on Facebook that tried to influence the 2016 US elections raise a disturbing question: is Facebook bad for democracy? As an expert in the social and political repercussions of technology, I think that the problem is not exclusively from Facebook, but that it is much broader: Social networks are weakening some of the conditions that have historically enabled the existence of national states democratic. I understand that it is a dramatic statement, and I do not expect anyone to believe it immediately, but considering that almost half of all potential voters received false news promoted by the Russians in Facebook is an argument that must be debated.
