Customers, protagonists of the new Orange coverage map

Orange's new coverage map not only informs about the type of coverage (4G +, 4G, 3G +...) that is in a given locality, municipality or area but also offers the possibility to check the quality of that coverage, verified with real samples of clients that have been connected. Until now, all operators based their coverage maps on estimates obtained from theoretical calculations made with complex propagation models. Orange It thus becomes the only Spanish operator that offers a mobile coverage map of these characteristics.

The map reflects the real customer experience on the Orange network, based on anonymous data from 13 million real customer usage connections. To obtain this data, the company collaborates with Weplan, an independent company that collects information of operator coverage.

Mar Somoza, Engineer of Senior Network in Orange Network Planning.

Orange has been working on this project for over a year in which it has made an investment close to half a million euros and for which more than 13 million samples have been added, with a short-term forecast of multiplying them by five. It is obvious that it is not a simple task, quite the opposite.»When making these maps , we have encountered several complex challenges to solve.Without a doubt, the most tedious has do the fusion of the seven layers of geographic information: one for each technology (2G, 3G +, 4G and 4G +), two of verified coverage (4G/4G + and 3G +) and the base map ”, according to Mar Somoza, Senior Network Engineer in the Network Planning department in Orange Spain.

»We have taken many turns on how to visualize these seven layers at the same time and that you clearly perceive both the coverage and location information, for example, the labels of streets and points of interest, and the hexagons of verified coverage », continued this professional responsible for coordinating this ambitious project. Finally, the solution arose through the combination of layer overlay with the base map and at the same time, a hierarchy of theoretical and verified coverage , playing In addition, with a suitable color palette and transparency, as well as a visual design of the verified coverage window that tells the client the experience that other clients have had in that area.To all this, we must add the complexity of working With these huge volumes of information and the great performance required for the geographic information system.

Higher level of trust for the user

Related This new coverage map offers the customer a higher level of trust, since being real samples allows us to confirm that it really is that technology (4G +/4G, 3G +...) the one the different devices are using when they connect to the Orange network.

In the example, we can see small hexagonal cells on Orange's 4G + coverage (yellow).Clicking on a cell shows a window that indicates that there have been real connections with 4G +/4G coverage with Orange's network, differentiating whether the coverage is excellent or good, thus showing the quality that the customer can expect in that area

Simpler and more intuitive coverage map

In addition, in its commitment to provide the customer with the best experience, Orange has sought to provide the new coverage map with greater usability and simplicity.

Therefore, it allows you to easily search the map by any address, zip code, municipality, province or even points of interest. You get a better sharpness on the map by using univocal colors in the different layers , and not to be confused with the colors used in the base map for lakes, rivers or parks, and greater transparency in the reading of address labels, by cutting the different layers in place of color overlay.

With this new functionality, Orange demonstrates its commitment to offer the best services to its mobile clients, which currently represent a total of 15,913,000 (being leaders in 4G technology, with 9 million of clients). In line with this same commitment, the company continues to invest in the extension and improvement of its 4G network, a project to which it is dedicating 1,500 million euros of accumulated investment, to deliver the fourth generation mobile technology to 95% of the population at the end of this year.
