Monsieur Sans-delai, said Mariano Jose de Larra, appeared in Madrid wanting to resolve the fringes of an inheritance in 15 days.He had to go back to France at six months without finding a solution. The culprit: "come back tomorrow." Of course it has been almost two centuries since Larra wrote his article. But, until two days ago, Bureaucratic procedures could still be eternalized.

Digitization has achieved in a short time what decades of complaints had not been achieved.Every time more administrative issues are available online and everything is thanks to a small encrypted file.We explain what the digital certificate is, how to get it and what to use it for.

Don't come back tomorrow, use the digital certificate

What is the digital certificate?

Bluntly. The digital certificate is an electronic document that serves to identify us on the network. It does so unequivocally and has legal validity, so it is a sensitive document. It is designed as a digital signature, to help citizens and companies to exchange data with the administration.

Usually, the physical person certificate or citizen certificate is known as a digital certificate. This is granted to every person in possession of a DNI or an NIE.But there are many more.certificates of physical person, there are certificates for representatives (for business administrators, for example), for legal entities and entities without legal personality, for the administration itself and even for servers or computer applications.

What is it for?

The digital certificate of a natural person allows more and more paperwork to be done through the internet. It is completely safe and valid .Signing an electronic document with the certificate is equivalent to doing it in person at an office of the administration. This process is used in a multitude of procedures and in an increasing number of administrations, both the central and the autonomous ones and the local ones.Even in other entities such as professional colleges, chambers of commerce, post offices and universities.

The tax agency is one of the administrations that allows more formalities with the certificate. We can present all kinds of declarations.Something similar happens with Social Security, on whose website we can, for example, update our data or request copies of any document In addition, most administrations already contemplate basic procedures with the digital certificate as the one of previous appointment. Here you can consult a list of all the entities and procedures that support this certificate.

Where to ask for the digital certificate

To have this electronic document that demonstrates our identity online , the first thing is to request it in one of the institutions that grants it.This request can be made, of course, through the internet. It is more common to do it on the website of the National Currency and Stamp Factory, or FNMT.In it we can also find very detailed information about the certificate and its utilities. In addition to the FNMT, other entities such as certain professional associations, the European Agency of Digital Trust or some autonomous organizations can grant it.

How to request the digital certificate

As we have seen, it is done through the internet. To request the digital certificate there are three procedures: with the DNI or NIE, with its electronic version or with the app of the FNMT for Android ( currently out of service and no return date). For the first two options the first thing is to make sure that the browser is compatible with the certificate. From the FNMT only ensure proper operation in Firefox or Internet Explorer.

In both cases, it is best to have the latest version installed, but the FNMT itself explains a series of procedures to make sure everything is in order. They even have a program to configure the browser (download here), in case Maybe once we make sure everything is correct, it's time to request the certificate.

Fill in the web form .A simple step in which you ask for little information. At the end, you will give us an application number associated with our ID.If we have used the electronic ID, the process ends here. They will send a digital certificate download code to our email .
Identity accreditation .If we have used the conventional ID, we will have to go to one of the authorized offices to prove that we are who we are.Last visit to the physical administration. We will have to go with the ID to one of the the more than 2,400 accredited offices, including all of the Social Security and the Tax Agency.
Download the certificate .Once our identity is accredited, they will send us a download code to the email. The same one that would have arrived if we had done the procedure with the electronic DNI.We will have to download and install it.
Options for smartphones .The FNMT has an application for Android only.Until recently, it was possible to request the digital certificate in it, following the same steps as with the conventional DNI However, this procedure is temporarily disabled.

Install the certificate

The FNMT warns that it is necessary to request, download and install the certificate on the same computer and the same browser version. The reality is less strict. However, the first time it is better to follow the steps to the letter.Yes, once the digital certificate has been downloaded, we go with its installation. The procedure is simple.Double click on the file and follow the steps indicated. If we install it in Internet Explorer, then we can also use it in Chrome (since they share certificate store). To have it also in Firefox you will have to repeat the installation process.

And don't forget the backup

The download code sent to the email has an expiration date, that is, we will not be able to use it every time we want to download the certificate again, so it is highly recommended to make a backup copy of the digital document.Control Panel> Internet options and we click on the Content tab and the Certificates button.

There we will see the digital certificates that we have installed. We choose one and press the Export button. In the process we can activate or deactivate several options. If we are not sure, we leave the ones that come by default. Before exporting it from definitively, we will also have to choose a password .This key will be requested when we reinstall the file we have exported.Without it, we will not be able to do it.

The FNMT also offers the possibility of buying a cryptographic card in which to have the backup copy.To read it and import the certificate, a card reader similar to that of the electronic ID will be necessary, be that as it may, the process, since We ask until we have it installed, it is less complicated than it seems. And, once it works, it makes things much easier and saves hours and hours of queues.

Internet of plants: a tomato knows as much about networks as you

The possibility of plant species communicating through complex networks, what some scientists have called the internet of plants , is an issue that has been discussed for a long time, at least 20 years. It was in 1997 when the scientist Suzanne Simard , from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada), published a study in the journal Nature on how Forest plants use complex systems where species exchange nutrients, send warning signals and relate to the environment. Although there is no scientific consensus, several investigations seem to support this hypothesis. If confirmed, as we read in a fascinating report by the Sinc Agency, the forests would act as huge structures that are articulated under the soil through a network in which factors invisible to the human eye interact and can determine the future of the climate.Understanding how it works is the challenge that even science faces. internet of plants and the wisdom of forests The premise of Suzanne Simard ...

New setbacks for conspiranoicos: radiofrequencies do not affect health

New evidence published by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Radio Frequency and Health (CCARS) in its 2016 Radio Frequency and Health Report indicates that there are no adverse health effects derived of exposure to radio frequencies emitted by mobile phone antennas or radio and television broadcasting. No evidence has been found on the danger in wireless systems (Wi-Fi) or airport scanners. The new 2016 Radio Frequency and Health Report collects, updates and analyzes the scientific evidence on the subject for the period between January 2013 and June 2016. radio frequencies are not dangerous According to the conclusions of the report " the critical analysis of the evidence supports that there are no technical or sanitary reasons that justify the arbitrary and discretionary imposition of more demanding exposure limits than those recommended by WHO-ICNIRP and the Union European ", while the application of more restrictive limits" would imply increasing the n...

Twitter shows the best of ourselves (it wasn't always going to be the worst)

In the era of social networks, accustomed to interact daily with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google or WhatsApp, we forget that these tools are phenomenal in the History of Humanity capable of mobilize hundreds of thousands of people in very different geographical locations in a matter of hours or even minutes. Already in the past, Twitter has asserted its more social dimension to mobilize people, companies or organizations and also, from a broader perspective, feelings of solidarity and support or also of rejection and repulses towards causes with an important mediatic impact.Recently, Twitter was once again the engine of solidarity after Dortmund's explosions as the Borussia Dortmund team bus passed on its way to the local stadium on the occasion of the Champions League match between the Borussia and the Monaco. These explosions did not have the devastating effect that they could have caused , so that everything remained in a major social commotion at international lev...

Most apps for children violate your privacy

Do you know if apps with which children enjoy their safety? A team of researchers from the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) of the University of Berkeley has studied compliance with the Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in these mobile applications for the little ones, through a scalable dynamic analysis that allows the automatic evaluation of privacy behaviors of Android apps. After studying 5,855 applications aimed at children, the research concludes that most of these apps, 57%, violate the privacy of their users mainly due to the use of data by third parties. apps for children and privacy Although many apps offer options in their configuration to respect the federal law that protects minors in the United States, by disabling tracking, their results suggest that a majority of applications either do not use these options or propagate them in wrong way. In addition, researchers believe that 19% of apps for children send user IDs to third parties to show ...

Are social networks damaging democracy?

The revelations according to which Russian agents inserted ads on Facebook that tried to influence the 2016 US elections raise a disturbing question: is Facebook bad for democracy? As an expert in the social and political repercussions of technology, I think that the problem is not exclusively from Facebook, but that it is much broader: Social networks are weakening some of the conditions that have historically enabled the existence of national states democratic. I understand that it is a dramatic statement, and I do not expect anyone to believe it immediately, but considering that almost half of all potential voters received false news promoted by the Russians in Facebook is an argument that must be debated.
