200,000 students distributed in 822 schools in Galicia will enjoy ultra-fast broadband connection, with 500/500 Mbps fiber in most of the centers, and a 30 Mbps WiFi network .This is the result of the first tender of Red.es within the Connected Schools Program , with a budget of 16, 5 million euros.
14.6 million euros
Finally, the tender has been won by Orange for an amount of 14.6 million euros over the next 4 years, with the possibility of an extension of two more years. The Connected Schools Program was presented more than a year ago with a global budget of 330 million euros. This first contest was aimed at providing ultra-fast broadband Internet access to all schools in Galicia, as well as deploying telecommunication networks and WIFI inside them.
In the Galician tender, the quality of service supported by network investments has prevailed over the possible amortization of infrastructure already deployed .
fiber investment
Orange, as the second telecommunications operator in the Spanish market, aims to invest heavily in Spain, and as announced by its CEO Laurent Paillasot in Santander at the beginning of September, it will reach 14 million homes spent with fiber in 2019.Orange already has 8,335,000 past real estate units with its fiber network , being the largest fiber footprint of the Orange Group.
In the words of Monica Sala, Director of Companies and Orange Network , "Orange's commitment to the market of large companies and public administrations is very firm and, in the case of Galicia, also it is a strategic commitment in that region that began with the OMV agreement with the operator R-Cable ".
tics in the classrooms
According to a report published by the European Commission, the situation in Spain has a high level of ICT equipment in the classroom, but its connectivity is still insufficient.
This fact has two readings, on the one hand, which does not take advantage of in an optimal way the technological equipment that has required a high investment by the educational system.
On the other, there are tens of thousands of digital content that Spanish schoolchildren cannot take advantage of to complete their training since they need high-speed internet.Among these materials are videos, online tools, presentations, and a long list of content that are not inaccessible without enough broadband.
connected schools
To combat this problem, last year the Government of Spain launched the Connected Schools Program, which combines the objectives of the Digital Agency for Spain, the Digital Culture Plan in the School and the Commission for the Public Administration Reform (CORA).
With this program, seeks to reduce the digital divide and promote innovative and quality education. According to some experts, only with a generalization of high speed in schools will a digital model be available economically sustainable, that allows to personalize education and guide it towards greater social justice and an adequate professional qualification.
The implementation of this program aims to benefit 6.5 million students belonging to more than 16,500 educational centers that can connect at a speed of 100 megabytes per second. In addition to improving internal communication networks in classrooms and other facilities and receive equipment and technological resources. It will also allow to connect to the IRIS Network, the Spanish network for Interconnection of Information Resources of universities and research centers.
