On June 15 comes into force the new regulations that allow all citizens of the union to call and navigate with their mobile phones in any European country without additional costs as contracted in theirs. This modification, baptized as the 'end of roaming' will lead to a considerable increase in data traffic in the operators' networks, in the case of Spain mainly in the most tourist areas. To avoid any incident and offers a quality service, the telecos are increasing the capacities of their network infrastructures.
Our country is one of the largest recipients of tourism in the EU throughout the year, especially during the summer, which is why Spanish operators have developed plans to reinforce their infrastructure. In 2017, everything seems to indicate that The number of tourists choosing Spain as a holiday destination will increase by 10% compared to the previous year , when 75.3 million foreign visitors arrived, according to El Economista.
In addition to the forecast of the increase in the number of tourists, the operators take into account that it is expected that tourists who used data last year could double their use and that many others who so far did not, begin to do so.This means that, with respect to the same holiday period last year, the traffic could be multiplied by four (estimate August 2017 vs August 2016).
adaptation at the end of roaming
The leading companies in the sector believe that the networks are prepared to support the expected increase in data traffic. However, they are working on strengthening infrastructure.
Analogous to what they usually do during holiday periods, but also taking into account this exceptional circumstance, Orange is developing a project to size its network, in order to respond to this additional demand , especially in the areas of greatest influx of tourists, to absorb these traffic increases without seeing the quality of their service diminished. This is carrying out capacity extensions and sizing their charging platforms, roaming security services, etc.which together will represent a disbursement of about 12.5 million euros.
Another issue that mobile phone operators have been working on is the adaptation of their commercial offer to the new market conditions that will generate the end of roaming charges. Telecommunications companies are informing customers of the changes, although some have already offered this free service for some time.
For example, Orange already advanced last year to the entry of the new European legislation by including the consumption of voice and data in the EU within Orange's Love Family rates and has continued this year applying the same measure in the rest of the Love catalog, as well as in the new mobile rates Go and in the recently released prepaid rates.
