The 5G is the new promise of the telecommunications sector that, predicts, thanks to this technology, a revolution that will consist in stopping connecting people to connect everything. From there, all kinds of speculation about the development of an ecosystem arise future technology, which includes autonomous cars, new mobile devices, sensors in our streets, open-hearted operations at a distance and, beyond that, applications that we cannot even imagine. However, it should be realistic about the current situation of this technology , as revealed in a meeting about this technology organized by El Espanol.
Related Today, 5G only offers more network capacity to the operators who, curiously, have an underutilized 4G network."There is still spectrum to grow, so this 5G fever must be lowered to the ground. At the moment it only provides capacity and this new network will be deployed when there is m viable business models that are yet to be seen, ”said Manuel Sanchez Malagon, director of network planning at Orange Espana who, after the auction, is leader in 5G spectrum in Spain with 100 MHZ.
Sanchez Malagon points out, in addition, some obstacles to the deployment of this new technology. That is why he asks the Government for the availability of an adjoining spectrum «because today we do not have it or we will know when we can have it and it is something critical».Orange manager points to the need for the 700 MHz band as soon as possible because, “with the current situation, an early 5G deployment with the current frequencies could force an additional deployment when the band is available of 700 ».
Regarding the use cases, Sanchez Malagon recognizes that it is not easy to promote the change in the industry ecosystem and, therefore, calls for the decided impulse of the Administration.
5g, a great opportunity for Spain
Precisely, Roberto Sanchez, General Director of Telecommunications and Information Technology of the Ministry of Economy and Business, referred to the call for ministerial assistance for the realization of 5G pilots and announced that, in There will be a new call for 2019.The maximum amount of aid for each of the pilots is 10 million euros, which would only cover 40% of the total cost of the project.
Sanchez acknowledged that Europe will not lead mobile innovation in 5G, for which it is late in the face of the strength of Asia and the US, but it has an opportunity in the development of the necessary ecosystem to take advantage of this new technology. As for our country, he pointed out that "Spain has a great leadership opportunity because we start from a privileged situation in which we are the country with the largest fiber optic deployment, which is essential to be able to use 5G technology."
The opportunity is very attractive since, according to the European Commission, the economic benefit of 5G will be 100,000 million euros with its implementation in four sectors , such as the car, health, transport and energy. In Spain, the estimated benefits are 15,000 million euros.
