The Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda (MINETAD) has kicked off the 5G technology as it considers it key, not only for the electronic communications sector, but for all components of society (companies , citizenship and AA.PP.) that may benefit from new services, solutions and applications. Therefore, El Espanol has held a forum on this technology that has had outstanding representatives of operators and manufacturers. All they have agreed that, before the commercial exploitation of 5G, work must be carried out in the development of use cases, favoring collaboration between companies, industries and administration.Front other previous technologies such as 3G or 4G, 5G is configured as an evolution rather than as a disruption, "an evolutionary revolution or a revolutionary evolution".
RelatedNone of the experts participating in the Spanish forum consider viab 5G commercial deployments before 2020 and flee from futuristic speculation. To illustrate this idea, Jose Sanchez de Rojas, Orange Spain Engineering director, and Engineer of the year 2017, remember that in the Blade movie Runner cars appeared flying by 2020 "and yet, today I had to survive another traffic jam in Madrid".
«Therefore 2019 will be a year of proofs of concept and pilots , but we cannot pretend to start developing this technology with real use cases until 2020 ″ , he explains.
5G and the intelligence of things
Sanchez de Rojas believes that the development, not so much of the Internet of Things as of Intelligence of Things, will be key in the new 5G scenario, "which will make the use of the 5G network incremental and complementary." This expert, whom we have interviewed in Nobbot, «5G actually implies addressing a paradigm shift in mobile networks and in many sectors of the industry as it responds to a need for industrial and social multiplesambitos, not focused on a residential environment ».
"Each sector-add-will have different requirements.5G technology allows the development of virtual networks adapted to the use case: bandwidth, latency, service differentiation. In a world of millions of connected things. Therefore We talk about vertical solutions in environments as diverse as Energy, Automotive, Health, Media or Entertainment «.They all share one or more needs such as time critical processes, automation without time requirements, remote control, connections between companies or within companies and connected personal assets.
Again very high investments will be required, that will not be sustained without a clear commitment to the digitalization of society.According to Sanchez de Rojas, the success factors from a technical point of view will be: the development of virtualization, which will allow to "program" networks dynamically or digital on demand of the use or the client; new “Massive MIMO” antennas , which allow ultra narrow and directed beams to provide the coverage system, high speeds and capacity and frequencies below 6 GHz , which facilitate the mobile network deployment in this technology.
there will be no neutral operator
According to the participants in the El Espanol table, "we are talking about a technological evolution that is complementary to the deployment of fiber and the 4G that we have today. We are not talking about a technical evolution of substitution by technological cycle , but of "a paradigm shift that has to live with 4G and with fiber to the home or office, where in Spain we are leaders within Europe".
A specific use case is the replacement of fixed access in areas where the deployment of fiber networks is not possible, with a technical solution well below the fiber benefits to the home or office but of wide superband.
What experts have also agreed is that there will not be a neutr operator or, as it has been raised on some occasion. Operators want to continue controlling the network experience of their clients and, on the other hand, do not see any economic stimulus in a proposal of those features.
